Proper Source Citing
I’ve been enamered with Pinterest lately. But the issue that’s been bugging me is the lack of proper source citations and what to do about them. Sure, Pinterest and other sites like Tumblr try to make it easy for users to use proper credit. The problem is, most people don’t.
For example:
I find menswear all the time on Pinterest that I want to ‘repin’. When I track back to the original pinner’s site, chances are it’s come from a menswear tumblr site. And while Tumblr does make it easy to cite a source, I’d venture to say that most don’t. In fact, if you read most people’s ‘about’ section on their tumblr site, they state very clearly that they’re ripping off images from the net and don’t claim any ownership.
Now, what am I to do? Should I ‘repin’ the person’s pin that I saw; adding to the long chain of improperly credited links? Should I ‘pin’ the tumblr site’s photo even though it doesn’t give credit either? Well, what I actually do is take a screenshot of the original site’s non-credited photo and pin that as “[no source]”. If someone comes along to claim it, I can easily edit the post to include the proper citation.
Anybody else got any good suggestions?
