Next time you see a lonely target symbol on TV supposedly representing some ‘high tech’ computer screen, think of this. THIS is cool. A target symbol is crap.
Check out the rest of his screenshots from the Avengers. They are very inspiring…or depressing - depending on your state of mind that day.

Story-centered design: Hacking your brain to think like a user
I used to design screens
Back in college, we were mostly designing posters, book covers, homepages, and lots of other single-screens.
This idea may single handedly point out the largest difference between Graphic Design and Industrial Design (the field of product design).
In teaching Industrial Design, a student is immersed in the user experience - that’s one of the central points of the discipline. Everything from concepting to model making and finally prototyping is focused around what a user’s experience is with the product. It’s engrained from day one of the first class. I’d like to think Jony Ive’s degree in Industrial Design is one reason he’s at the top of his field when it comes to design.

He was an inspiration to design geeks everywhere.

Looks like Pinterest pushed out a redesign of how pins are viewed. Now, instead of taking the user to a different page, each pin becomes a lightbox/overlay on top of the board it resides in.

What website am I on?
Interesting comparisons b/n the White House and the Tea Party’s online presence. I’d say design and branding DO make a difference.
Hiring a Unicorn
In terms of skill coverage, when you hire a designer that can code, you’re doubling down on engineering, when you could be diversifying and getting other skills on your team. But most important, design is a full-time job. If you’re asking your designer to write code, you’re asking them to spend less time designing, studying users, prototyping, and doing all of the other activities that lead to great products.
Best description I’ve read as to why I don’t need to learn to code expertly. I say, ‘expertly’ because I think a designer - like the author also believes - needs to understand his medium, which means at least understanding code. But I don’t need to go spending many sleepless nights learning how to write expert code unless I’m planning on building my own app.
I trusted him to know exactly what to do. He had the same vision I did, and we could interact at a high strategic level and I could just forget about a lot of things unless he came and pinged me.

I asked him if he would come up with a few options, and he said, ‘No, I will solve your problem for you and you will pay me. You don’t have to use the solution. If you want options go talk to other people.

It’s not that I don’t want to pay you, but if I were to pay each person I asked to design me a logo, right now, I’d have a lot of people to pay. Simply put, I didn’t choose yours. That’s capitalism, man.

Call it a boycott. We are long-time contributors but will suspend monthly checks until PBS discontinues transmitting distracting logos and pop-ups. That misguided policy is disrespectful and insulting, what one might expect from, say, FOX. Friends and acquaintances agree wholeheartedly. The local station, KEDT, merely passed the buck on to you. So thanks for the free shows! Please forward this to the decision makers.

Posterous Gets A Massive Revamp
Well, that’s an understatment.
Spaces
Now this is the biggie. Firstly, what are Spaces?
Spaces are what Posterous used to call ‘sites’, a place where you can share privately or publicly with your friends, family or groups. Each Space comes with its own custom web address and the look and feel can be customized from one of 45 standard themes or custom html. Each of your previous Posterous blogs is now a space. Why not just just stick to ‘Site’? Because founder Sachin Agarwal wants to highlight the platform agnostic nature of the new Posterous, a site or a blog is too Web focused, whereas “space” could be anywhere.
For someone who’s used to Posterous’ old layout and design, this is a bit of a shock. But I’m looking forward to getting into all the new settings. I’m up for anything to make Posterous a more robust/social platform.

Art Direction v. Design
As a designer, you go from jubilation of a new project, to rejection (presentation), and back to jubilation when a new idea strikes.
As an Art Director, you go from dejection at the budget, to jubilation (the designer’s presentation), back to dejection when the client wants MORE changes.
Gowalla - Re-Imagined
From time to time, to stretch my creative legs, I like to venture into uncharted waters. And seeing as how I already gave Foursquare a piece of my mind, I thought it was time to turn my attention towards Gowalla.
I wanted to re-layout (not redesign) the check-in screen to be more in keeping with what I wanted. Gowalla has some nice features that I think are hidden or not available at all in the iOS app that I wanted to bring to light.
