In typical PBS fashion, we aired an awesome show last night with no promotion. If you’d like to see it, it should be airing on 4/28 at 11AM/ET on WETA. Or check your local listings.

USA Network teams up with Viggle for ‘To Kill A Mockingbird’

There’s something here for PBS to learn. A way to turn check-in points into cash donations?!

I watched three episodes of Downton Abbey and wanted to punch someone in the face for the complete and utter bulls**t that it is. It’s the most romantic, y’know, romantic piece of tripe it just made me want to kick somebody.

PBS is SO “Square”

Square, a mobile payment system that makes the act of accepting credit cards very easy, was unveiled in early December 2009.

Here’s how Square works: A small device attaches to the phone via the headset/microphone jack. The device gets the power it needs to send data to the phone from the swipe of the card, and sends the information over the microphone connection. The device is compatible with both the iPhone and Android. It’s similar in some ways to PayPal, but anyone can now accept physical credit card payments, too. With no contracts or monthly fees. People are sent receipts by text and email.

It was quickly adopted for local fundraising because of it’s ease of use. But since then, the technology has largely flown under the radar of mainstream awareness. So, when it was announced that both Obama & Romney were creating special apps to utilize Square’s payment system for local fundraising, I wanted to know if any local PBS stations had tried this idea.

I posted a question to the CAC group on Facebook as to whether any local stations had ever used this particular device to help raise donations at local events. From the few responses I received, it seemed that most were aware of the technology around mobile donations but only KCPT had used Square as their payment system.

I think Square is something every station should look into using for local events. Five dollars here and there might add up over time. And the idea of micro payments is one that the general public is very used to seeing.

At the Washington Car Show last weekend I noticed that PBS had a booth on the show floor where parents could drop off their kids to watch PBS KIDS shows and get their picture taken with the characters. If WHUT also had a system such as Square in place, how many parents would have given $5 in donation for such a great service? And so what if the donations are small? Getting people used to giving in return for a service like PBS is of no small value. That small idea could pay back 10x when pledge time rolls around.

Is it OK to steal “Downton Abbey”?

The idea that it’s OK to steal episodes because PBS is “free anyway” is something that has me concerned. It’s NOT free! I could go on a long bender about where our money comes from but I won’t. I would have thought that the message of viewer supported public television with our pledge drives and 30 year message of “Viewers Like You. Thank You” would be well known by now, but I guess the idea might be new to this generation.

PBS President says no major retooling needed for public TV, but mulls adding pay-TV service | USC Annenberg Center on Communication Leadership & Policy

shaneguiter:

PBS President Paula Kerger said today she disagreed with Bill Moyers’ call for a national meeting to reconsider and re-define U.S. public broadcasting.

Moyers called for a “constitutional convention” to spur a “rebirth” of public television and radio, ina speech this month to public TV executives.

“The core problem,” said Moyers, “is that we still don’t have an expansive national vision of what we’re about, where we want to go and what we want to become. Until we are able to say clearly and comprehensively what it is we really want to do, how much it will cost, and how we intend to get there, we can’t blame Congress, the White House or even the foundations for not supporting us more fully.”

But PBS’ president, speaking today on KQED Radio, did not support Moyers’ call to action.

“I’m not sure I agree with him,” Kerger said.

But at the end of the program, Kerger said that to raise money, PBS is considering a “subscription model” that would enable paying subscribers to have access to “a larger library” of archived material.

Crap.

How PBS used GetGlue to promote Ken Burns’ “Prohibition” » Nieman Journalism Lab

publicmedia:

Kevin Dando, PBS’ director of digital marketing and communications, told me in a phone interview that those numbers are a reflection of PBS’ heavy involvement with GetGlue and other social media platforms. “There are several different stickers that people can get withProhibition,” Dando said. “You get one for checking in and watching a preview, you get ones for each of the three episodes, and then there’s one for people who have watched all three nights.”

And guess who Art Directed those stickers :)

Call it a boycott. We are long-time contributors but will suspend monthly checks until PBS discontinues transmitting distracting logos and pop-ups. That misguided policy is disrespectful and insulting, what one might expect from, say, FOX. Friends and acquaintances agree wholeheartedly. The local station, KEDT, merely passed the buck on to you. So thanks for the free shows! Please forward this to the decision makers.
